Contrary to common belief, exercise does not entirely answer to everyone's need to lose excess weight. Overweight individuals usually suffer frustrations at their failure to lose weight even with a regular exercise regimen and strict diet. In this case, gastric weight loss surgery is seen as a solution to fighting severe weight problems or obesity. However, not everyone who wanted to lose a few pounds can undergo surgery. Surgeons only allow gastric weight loss surgery to male patients who are at least 100 pounds overweight and female patients who are at least 80 pounds overweight. Also, it is recommended for individuals who have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher (extremely obese). Overweight and obese individuals who have a BMI or 35 to 39.9 and are already diagnosed with sleep apnea, diabetes and heart disease may also be allowed to undergo this procedure.
